Mary Katherine Kelley of Monrovia,  California, died on January  20,  2019 from the late sequelae of a head injury sustained in a fall two months before.  Born in Winchester, Ohio June 28, 1942, Mary Katherine, known to all as Kathy, was raised in Peebles, Ohio, by her parents, John and Dolores Leshy.  Valedictorian of her high school class, Kathy, honored with membership in Phi Beta Kappa, graduated summa cum laude from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio in 1964.  At OWU, she was a member of the four student team that trounced UCLA in the popular TV quiz show, College Bowl.   Kathy pursued graduate study in Medical Science at Harvard Medical School, specializing in electron microscopy of the argentaffin cells of the  mouse stomach.  At Harvard, she met and married her husband of 44 years, Jonathan Kelley.  They had one child, Sarah Euverard Kelley.  At the end of Jonathan’s anesthesia residency in Boston, the family moved to Bethesda, MD for Jonathan’s Navy service during Vietnam.  In DC, Kathy studied law, at George Washington University, finishing at Stanford Law School in Palo Alto, CA after another family move following Jonathan’s discharge from the Navy.  Until 2002, Kathy lived in Los Altos, CA, pursuing her law practice in partnership with her close friend Barbara Roupe.  During her years in Los Altos, Kathy performed public service on the board of the San Jose chapter of the YWCA.  In 2002, following Jonathan’s retirement from his anesthesia practice, Kathy moved to Los Angeles in order to be closer to her daughter Sarah, and granddaughter Winifred Rose Chavira.   In Los Angeles, Kathy continued her public service on the board of the Community Foundation of Sierra Madre.  Throughout her married life, Kathy was fortunate to enjoy extensive world wide travels with her husband Jonathan, pari passu with ongoing study of art and architecture.  Kathy had a brilliant mind, was well-read across the board, capable of reciting sonnets by Shakespeare, quoting literary works in German, and discussing her broad knowledge of the Bible, the Koran, and other important texts.  Kathy’s marriage to Jonathan ended in 2011.  Kathy leaves her beloved siblings DeDe Leshy of Los Angeles, and her brother, Hastings Law Professor John Leshy of San Francisco, also her former husband Jonathan with whom she remained close, her daughter Sarah, a public relations expert,  and granddaughter Winifred, a blooming studio artist, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family across the United States.
