"La Niña de Guatemala" by Cuban poet José Martí, is a poem well known to many Latino friends, many of whom can recite it by heart. I thought I should learn it too. It's a very sad story about a lovelorn Miss from Guatemala who drowns herself in a river when her lover returns to Cuba with a new wife. The time sequence and reader identity sequence shift subtly over the nine stanzas of the poem, leading the reader to a complete understanding of the tragedy by the last word.
