I started writing the chapters for this account of my life as an anesthesiologist some decades ago, after reading an autobiography by a very famous surgeon I'd known during my training in Boston.  Somehow, his autobiography didn't sound right to me.... it only hit the academic honors and prizes he'd been awarded.  Nothing about the disappointments or problems.  I started then to write my story.  If something happened on a work day that touched me, that bit into me, upset me, or moved me, I'd go home that night and write a chapter about it.  Of course the medical school part, how I wasted so much time when I was in college, my two years in the Navy....  that was all filled in with bits and dribbles as my memories came to the surface.  What I loved about writing this is how the process gave me insight into my career trajectory, for what it's worth.  The whys, the changing motivations, the personal growth, if you will.  None of this would have come to fruition without the astounding abilities of my sister Sarah Shepherd in navigating the changing seas of self-publishing on the Internet.
